How to Choose the Perfect Playground for Your Backyard

Choosing a backyard playground can feel overwhelming — there are shapes, sizes, models and series to think about, and you want to get it right the first time. The good news? Once you break it down, there are really only three simple questions to answer: what shape suits your yard, how much play you want to start with, and which build quality fits your budget and long-term plans.

Here's a straightforward guide to help you find your perfect playground.

Step 1: Choose your base style — Fort or Playcentre

Every playground starts with a base shape, and your yard will usually make this decision easy.

Two outdoor playground structures shown on a white background, labeled 'Fort' and 'Playcentre'. Children are visible climbing, swinging, and sliding on both structures.

Fort Playgrounds Fort playgrounds have a square base and platform, giving you a classic, traditional look. They're a great way to maximise play when space is tight, and they work best on level yards.

Playcentre Playgrounds Playcentre playgrounds have a bigger footprint than forts, giving kids more room to swing, slide and play. Thanks to their angled base sides, they're a better fit for uneven yards.

Tip: not sure how your section stacks up? Send a photo and your yard's dimensions to the team and they'll help measure out the safety perimeter for you.

Step 2: Decide how much playground you want to start with

Playgrounds are modular, so you can start smaller and add on later as your kids grow (or your budget allows). Here's how the models build on each other:

Model What it adds Price Footprint
    Model 1 — Space-savers Compact base model $15,000 2.7m x 5.2m
    Model 2 — Plus Swings Adds a swing set $6,400–$25,560 4.6m x 4.6m to 4.3m x 8m
    Model 3 — Plus Monkey Bars Adds monkey bars $12,420–$27,970 4.9m x 5.5m to 4.3m x 7.9m
    Model 4 — Plus Sky Loft Adds a sky loft $17,280–$31,210 4.9m x 5.5m to 4.3m x 8m
    Model 5 — Plus Tube Slide Adds a tube slide $26,280–$40,210 6.4m x 6.7m to 4.9m x 8m
    Model 6 — Mega Playsets The full works $28,440–$46,980 5.5m x 6.1m to 5.8m x 11.6m

Got a small backyard? Start with the Space-saver or Model 2 range — it's designed to fit tighter sections and can still grow with your family if you move to a bigger yard later on.

    Step 3: Pick your series — Classic/Original or Deluxe/Supreme

Once you've settled on a shape and a model, the final choice is build quality.

Classic & Original Series — Great value, classic framework Priced from $8,640 to $31,100, these are premium cedar playgrounds with everything you need for a fun, safe backyard adventure. Modular design lets you add swings, monkey bars, sky lofts and more over time.

Deluxe & Supreme Series — The ultimate high-flying structure Priced from $15,000 to $46,980, this is the Premier Series architecture for families wanting the very best: thicker 4x4 and 4x6 solid timber construction, wider and thicker play decks, beefier A-frame legs and ladders, more headroom, and commercial-grade hardware. It also allows for longer slides.

Here's how they compare on the numbers:

Feature Classic & Original Deluxe & Supreme
    Play deck height 1.5–1.8m 1.5–2m
    Head room 1.7–1.8m 2.1m
    Play deck size 1.1m x 1.1m to 1.2m x 1.8m 1.5m x 1.5m
    Swing beam length 2.4–3m 3.7m

There are 2 options of the model 2 playgrounds to have a 2 position swing beam to save space, all other models come with a 3-position swing beam, so no matter which series you choose, the kids won't be waiting long for a turn.

Footprint size by series and model

Once you know your shape and series, here's the footprint (Length × Width in metres) for each activity level. This is the actual structure size — remember to add your safety zone (1.2–1.8m) around every edge on top of these numbers.

Note: not every series is available in every shape — Fort doesn't currently offer a Deluxe tier, and Classic is only available at the Model 2 (base) level in both shapes.

    Fort Playgrounds

    Series Model 2 (+Swings) Model 3 (+Monkey Bars) Model 4 (+Sky Loft) Model 5 (+Tube Slide) Model 6 (Mega)
    Classic Fort 4.57m × 4.57m — — — —
    Original Fort 5.49m × 4.88m 5.64m × 5.18m 5.64m × 6.40m 6.71m × 6.40m 6.10m × 5.49m (High Roller)
    Supreme Fort 6.10m × 5.79m 6.10m × 5.79m 6.10m × 5.79m 6.71m × 5.79m —

    Playcentre Playgrounds

    Series Model 2 (+Swings) Model 3 (+Monkey Bars) Model 4 (+Sky Loft) Model 5 (+Tube Slide) Model 6 (Mega)
    Classic Playcentre 5.79m × 3.35m — — — —
    Original Playcentre 7.01m × 3.81m 7.01m × 3.81m 7.01m × 3.81m 7.01m × 4.57m 9.75m × 4.88m (Double Zinger)
    Deluxe Playcentre 7.62m × 3.96m 7.62m × 3.96m 7.62m × 3.96m 7.62m × 4.57m —
    Supreme Playcentre 6.10m × 5.79m 7.92m × 4.27m 7.92m × 4.27m 7.92m × 4.88m 11.58m × 5.79m (Dual Triple Shot)

A quick way to read this: moving across a row (left to right) shows how the footprint grows as you add monkey bars, a sky loft and a tube slide to the same series. Moving down a column shows how much extra room the higher-spec series need for the same activity level — Playcentre in particular grows noticeably from Original to Supreme once monkey bars are added.

Match it to your children's ages

Toddlers to 5 years — Typically the Model 1 or Model 2 is great for this age, and consider adding a swing with extra support, like the baby swing range.

5+ years — Older kids usually want more of a challenge, so consider moving into the Model 3, 4, 5 or 6 playgrounds, as these have more complex activities to keep them engaged as they grow.

The playgrounds can carry adults too, so you can supervise young children closely as they grow into the playground.

Because every playground is modular, you don't need to get it "perfect" from day one — you can add higher platforms, monkey bars or a tube slide down the track as your children (and their confidence) grow.

    Why cedar wood?

All Kiwiplay playgrounds are built from cedar, chosen for its natural resistance to rot and insect damage as well as its beautiful, natural look. Like any wood product, sealing it every 1–2 years will keep it looking great and significantly extend its lifespan — decades, in fact. Every playground also comes with a 10-year warranty on wood and workmanship, with a 2-year warranty on accessories and the tarp roof.

    Don't forget the safety zone

Whichever playground you choose, allow a minimum of 1.2m of clear space around each edge, with 1.8m being the preferred safety zone. Each playground listing includes a diagram with its footprint and recommended minimum safety zone, so you can see exactly how much room you'll need before you buy.

A few other safety basics worth keeping in mind:

    • Place the playset on level ground, away from tree branches and power lines
    • Add a soft-fall surface underneath to cushion any falls
    • Check regularly for loose bolts, rust or worn parts
    • Supervise younger children while they play
